Terms of Use

These Terms of Use (the “Terms”) are the agreement between you and Switchfeed for the Switchfeed app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and for this website, switchfeed.app. Please read them — they are short, and they explain what the app does and does not promise.

1. Agreement to these terms

By downloading, installing or using Switchfeed, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app; delete it and, if you paid for something, see section 9 for how refunds work through Apple.

Switchfeed is made and operated by Andrea Fomera, trading as “Switchfeed” (“Switchfeed,” “we,” “us”). You can reach us at support@switchfeed.app.

2. What Switchfeed is

Switchfeed is a native client for two social networks you already have accounts on. It offers multi-account timelines, posting, crossposting (write once, publish to several accounts), a unified merged feed, moderation tools, search and bookmarks. It runs on iOS 18 and later, iPadOS and macOS 15 and later, and is distributed only through Apple’s App Store, Mac App Store and TestFlight.

Switchfeed is a third-party client. Your device connects directly to Bluesky and the AT Protocol network (your Personal Data Server, the Bluesky AppView, and the feed generators and labelers you choose) and to any Mastodon instance you sign in to. Switchfeed operates no servers of its own and no data passes through Switchfeed. We do not host, store, transmit or moderate any content: we render what those networks send to your device, and we send what you write to the network you addressed it to.

Switchfeed is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Bluesky Social PBC or Mastodon gGmbH. Those services set their own terms, their own privacy policies and their own rules, and they can change, restrict, rate-limit or discontinue their APIs at any time, which may break features of the app through no fault of ours.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Switchfeed, and old enough to use the networks you connect it to — Bluesky requires 13 or older, and many Mastodon instances require 16 or older or set their own minimum. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the app only with the involvement of a parent or guardian, who accepts these Terms on your behalf. You must also be able to form a binding contract and not be barred from using the app under applicable law.

4. Your license to use the app

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use one copy of Switchfeed on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service and the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions. You may use it for personal or internal business purposes. This is a license, not a sale: we keep all rights not expressly granted.

You may not:

  • copy, redistribute, sell, rent, lease, sublicense or host the app for others;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except where that is allowed by law that cannot be contracted out of;
  • remove or alter any copyright, trademark or other notices;
  • use the app to build a competing product, or scrape it for data at scale;
  • circumvent purchase or licensing checks, or use the app on a jailbroken or otherwise modified system in a way that defeats platform security.

5. Your accounts and the networks

You are responsible for your accounts on Bluesky and on any Mastodon instance you sign in to, and for everything done through them in the app. Sign-in happens directly with the network: Bluesky uses an app password or session token, Mastodon uses OAuth. Those credentials are stored only in the Apple Keychain on your device; we never see them. Keep them safe, use an app password rather than your main Bluesky password where you can, and revoke access from the network’s own settings if a device is lost.

Your use of each network is governed by that network’s terms and policies, and by the rules of the specific instance or Personal Data Server you use. Those rules can result in your posts being removed or your account being suspended, and Switchfeed has no power to prevent, appeal or reverse that. Content you post through Switchfeed — including anything you crosspost to several accounts at once — is published on those networks under their visibility rules, and on both networks posts are public by default. Think before you crosspost: the same message will appear on every account you selected.

You keep all rights to the content you create. We claim no ownership of and no license to your posts, media, drafts or private notes, because none of it ever reaches us.

6. Acceptable use

When using Switchfeed, you agree not to:

  • post or transmit anything illegal, or anything that infringes someone else’s rights;
  • post content that sexually exploits or endangers children, incites violence, or constitutes harassment, hate speech, threats or stalking;
  • use the app to spam, to run bulk automated posting, or to evade a block, mute, suspension or ban on any network;
  • break the terms, community guidelines or API rules of Bluesky, of any Personal Data Server, or of any Mastodon instance you connect to;
  • attempt to overload, probe or interfere with any network or service the app connects to, or with other people’s use of it;
  • impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your affiliation with a person or organization;
  • upload malware, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to any system or account.

Because we do not host or transmit content, we generally cannot see, remove or moderate what you or anyone else posts — the right place to enforce these rules is the network itself. We may still stop supporting your use of the app, or ask Apple to act, if we learn the app is being used for serious abuse.

7. Content, moderation and reporting

Switchfeed displays content created by other people on Bluesky and Mastodon. We do not create, endorse, review or vouch for any of it. You may encounter content you find offensive, inaccurate or harmful. You use the app knowing that, and any dispute about content is between you and the person who posted it and the service that hosts it.

Switchfeed gives you the networks’ own moderation tools, right where you are reading:

  • Mute someone to stop seeing their posts, on either network;
  • Block someone to cut the connection both ways — and, when you block from a post, save a link to that post in your private note so you remember why;
  • Report a post or an account to the network’s own moderation team, through their reporting system;
  • use labelers and content warnings, with media hidden behind covers when the network’s labels call for it.

Mutes, blocks and reports are carried out by Bluesky, by your Personal Data Server, or by your Mastodon instance — we pass your request along and show you the result. Those services decide what action to take and how quickly; we have no visibility into or control over their decisions. We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users, and expect you to use these tools when you encounter either. If you believe something in the app itself is broken or misused, tell us at support@switchfeed.app and we will respond, though for content itself the network’s report button is the effective route.

8. Beta releases and TestFlight

Beta versions distributed through TestFlight are pre-release software provided as is. They may contain bugs, lose data, drain battery, behave unpredictably or stop working entirely. Apple’s TestFlight terms apply in addition to these Terms. Beta features may change, be restricted or be removed before or after general release, and beta builds expire. Don’t rely on a beta for anything you cannot afford to lose, and please report what you find.

9. Paid features and subscriptions

Switchfeed is free to download, and core reading and posting features are free to use. During the beta, crossposting and the unified feed are available to everyone as a free trial. That trial is part of the beta: it can end when the beta ends, and those features will then be offered as a paid upgrade.

9.1 In-app purchases

After the beta, paid features will be sold as in-app purchases through Apple — either a one-time purchase or an auto-renewing subscription, as described in the app at the time. The price, the billing period and what is included are shown on the purchase screen and in the App Store before you buy. Payment is charged to your Apple Account on confirmation of purchase. All purchases are processed by Apple; we never handle your payment details.

9.2 Auto-renewing subscriptions

If you buy an auto-renewing subscription:

  • the subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period;
  • your Apple Account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period, at the then-current price;
  • you can manage or cancel the subscription in your Apple Account settings (Settings › your name › Subscriptions on iOS, or App Store › Account › Subscriptions on a Mac) at any time;
  • canceling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for, and access continues until that period runs out;
  • deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

9.3 Free trials

If a free trial is offered, any unused part of it is forfeited when you buy a subscription covering the same content. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, the trial converts into a paid subscription at the price shown when you signed up. Apple limits free trials to one per Apple Account per offer.

9.4 Family Sharing

Where a purchase is marked as supporting Family Sharing in the App Store, members of your Family Group may use it under Apple’s rules. Whether a given purchase supports Family Sharing is shown on its App Store or in-app purchase page.

9.5 Refunds and price changes

Switchfeed cannot issue refunds directly. All purchases are made through Apple, so refund requests go to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Apple decides them under its own policies. Your statutory rights to a refund, where they apply, are not affected. Prices may change for future purchases and renewals; Apple notifies subscribers of price increases and asks for consent where required, and you can cancel before a change takes effect.

9.6 What a purchase gets you

A purchase unlocks features in the app on the Apple Account that bought it. It does not buy access to Bluesky, to Mastodon or to any instance — those services are separate, free or paid on their own terms, and outside our control. If a network changes in a way that removes a paid feature’s ability to function, we will do what we reasonably can to adapt the app, and you can cancel a subscription at any time.

10. Intellectual property

Switchfeed, including its code, design, name, logo, icons and documentation, belongs to us and is protected by copyright and other laws. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of those rights to you beyond the license in section 4. Your content remains yours; content belonging to other users and to the networks remains theirs.

If you believe something in Switchfeed infringes your copyright or trademark, write to support@switchfeed.app with enough detail to identify the work and the material at issue, and we will look into it promptly. For content published on Bluesky or Mastodon, the notice must go to that service, since they host it and we do not.

If you send us feedback, bug reports or suggestions, we may use them to improve Switchfeed without obligation or payment to you. You do not give up any rights in your own work by telling us what you think of ours.

11. Third-party services and open source

Your use of Bluesky, of any Personal Data Server, feed generator or labeler, and of any Mastodon instance is subject to that party’s own terms and privacy policy. Those are agreements between you and them. We are not responsible for their availability, accuracy, content, moderation decisions, pricing or conduct, and their terms apply to you when you use them through Switchfeed.

Switchfeed includes open source software, including Nuke (MIT license) for image loading. Those components are licensed under their own terms, which take precedence over these Terms for the components themselves. License texts are shown in the app and are available on request.

12. Privacy

Switchfeed collects no personal data, runs no servers and includes no analytics, tracking or advertising. Our Privacy Policy explains in detail what stays on your device, what optional iCloud sync does, and how to delete everything. It is part of these Terms.

13. Disclaimer of warranties

Switchfeed is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, accuracy and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.

We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or error-free; that posts, crossposts or uploads will always succeed; that timelines, caches or search results will be complete or current; that defects will be corrected; or that the networks the app depends on will remain available or compatible. You are responsible for your own backups and for verifying anything that matters.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you, and you may have consumer rights that these Terms do not affect.

14. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Switchfeed and Andrea Fomera will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost posts or drafts, loss of goodwill, business interruption, or the cost of substitute software, arising out of or relating to your use of or inability to use the app, whatever the theory of liability and even if we were advised such damages were possible.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the app is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us or paid through Apple for Switchfeed in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) US$50.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or under non-waivable consumer protection law. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

15. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Switchfeed and Andrea Fomera from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities and reasonable legal costs arising out of your content, your use or misuse of the app, your breach of these Terms or of any network’s terms, or your violation of any law or of anyone else’s rights. We will tell you promptly about any such claim and may participate in its defense at our own expense; you will not settle a claim in a way that imposes any obligation on us without our written consent.

16. Termination

You may stop using Switchfeed at any time by deleting it. Deleting the app removes the data it stored on that device; it does not delete your accounts or anything you published on Bluesky or Mastodon, and it does not cancel a subscription (see section 9.2).

We may suspend or end your license under these Terms if you materially breach them, or if we discontinue the app. If your license ends, you must stop using the app and delete it. Where a paid feature ends through no fault of yours, Apple’s refund policies apply. Sections 10 and 13 through 20 survive termination.

17. Changes to the app and to these terms

Switchfeed is actively developed. We may add, change or remove features, including beta features, and we may need to change how things work when Bluesky or Mastodon change their APIs. We may stop supporting older operating system versions in future releases.

We may update these Terms. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and post the new version here, and for significant changes we will give notice in the app or on the site. Changes are not retroactive. If you keep using Switchfeed after an update takes effect, you accept the new Terms; if you don’t agree, stop using the app and delete it.

18. Governing law and venue

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, USA, without regard to its conflict of laws rules, and you and we agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, for any dispute that is not resolved informally. If you are a consumer resident in the EEA, the UK or another jurisdiction whose law gives you the protection of your local courts and mandatory consumer rules, nothing here takes those away.

Before filing anything, please email support@switchfeed.app — most problems are quicker to fix than to litigate.

19. Apple-specific terms

The following applies because Switchfeed is licensed through Apple’s App Store, Mac App Store and TestFlight, and supplements Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. If anything in this section conflicts with the rest of these Terms, this section controls for Apple-related matters.

  1. Between you and us. These Terms are concluded between you and Switchfeed only, not with Apple. Switchfeed, not Apple, is solely responsible for the app and its content.
  2. Scope of license. The license granted in section 4 is limited to a non-transferable license to use Switchfeed on any Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, except that it may be accessed by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
  3. Maintenance and support. Switchfeed is solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support services for the app, as stated in these Terms or as required by law. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance and support services for the app.
  4. Warranty. Switchfeed is solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you (if any); to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple will have no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to any failure to conform to any warranty will be Switchfeed’s sole responsibility.
  5. Product claims. Switchfeed, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the app or your possession and use of it, including: (a) product liability claims; (b) any claim that the app fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (c) claims arising under consumer protection, privacy or similar legislation, including in connection with the app’s use of any framework. These Terms do not limit Switchfeed’s liability to you beyond what applicable law permits.
  6. Intellectual property claims. In the event of any third-party claim that the app or your possession and use of it infringes that third party’s intellectual property rights, Switchfeed, not Apple, will be solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of any such claim.
  7. Legal compliance and export. You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You agree to comply with all applicable U.S. and other export control and sanctions laws when using the app.
  8. Developer contact. Questions, complaints and claims about the app should be sent to Switchfeed at support@switchfeed.app.
  9. Third-party terms. You must comply with any applicable third-party terms of agreement when using Switchfeed — including the terms of Bluesky, of your Personal Data Server, and of any Mastodon instance you connect to.
  10. Apple as third-party beneficiary. You acknowledge and agree that Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms, and that upon your acceptance of these Terms Apple will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary of them.

20. Trademarks

Bluesky is a trademark of Bluesky Social PBC. Mastodon is a trademark of Mastodon gGmbH. Apple, App Store, Mac App Store, TestFlight, iCloud, iPhone, iPad and Mac are trademarks of Apple Inc. All other names and logos are the property of their respective owners. Switchfeed is an independent, unaffiliated third-party client and uses these names only to describe what the app works with, which is no claim of affiliation, endorsement or sponsorship.

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Switchfeed and replace any earlier version. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them to a successor of the Switchfeed project.
